CVD diamond is being used to coat mechanical seals for pumps and other rotary machines handling liquid and gaseous materials. CVD diamond is extremely durable under harsh conditions and with its high biocompatibility and extreme chemical resistance, diamond is an excellent material for these applications.

sp3 has extensive experience coating a wide variety of substrate materials used for mechanical seals. In addition, sp3’s hot filament CVD process provides for uniform diamond growth over large areas (exceeding 350mm by 375mm), while its process allows for the flexibility of various film types to accommodate customers’ specific applications. Typically, for seal applications, it is best to utilize nanocrystalline (NCD) morphologies to minimize friction. sp3 produces a wide range of film morphologies including extremely smooth NCD coatings.
